2012 Must Reads for the Creative Mind
Hello 2012! Hello Tumblr! I am never consistent at anything I do. Somehow in 2012 I will tackle that challenge. But there is one thing I have been able to stay consistent at and that is learning the art of photography. I am a rookie trying to level up if you will. Can’t say I am much of a teacher at the moment but what I can share are books, images and all things under the sun that inspire the creative minds to keep climbing and to never give up…NEVER!
You may say to self, “Self what do these books she is sharing have to do with being creative?” Well let me say this, a good relationship with self, with the world, with anyone is an art in itself. Some have mastered the skill, I envy those who have. If you are an introverted creative mind like me you may feel it just as important to me to master in order to make it in an extrovert world. Lets face it, I like to capture faces, people, movement and I need to over come this fear of the human species to make that happen. I know a lot of creative minds are not necessarily extroverts and turn to art to express what it is they want to be heard. I envy the extrovert sometimes, ok~ most of the time! But I am beginning to understand and appreciate the introvert within and the gifts they can bring to the table.
Ok, so here we go ladies and gents! I give to you 3 must reads for those creatives out there who fear the unknown, question their greatness, & maybe just need a pep talk to keep going when your mind asks ridiculous questions starting with “Why” or “How”
#1
“How to Win Friends & Influence People” I have repeatedly heard from creatives everywhere to read this book. I am so glad I did! I left this book with a new perspective of relationship dynamics whether it be in marriage, professional, family or friendship, you will gain a point of view that seems so simple yet so many of us find so hard to maneuver on a day to day basis. This book bottom line screams to always, “Treat others how you would like to be treated!” Now let those words really sink in and imagine the endless possibilities to make this happen in 2012.
#2
“The Introvert Advantage~How to Thrive in an Extrovert World” By Marti Olsen Laney: Yes this may scream, “Introvert’s only read!” but~ NO! I encourage all to read to understand the often misunderstood introvert especially if you know one in your life. It will help you understand them on a level you never could otherwise & dismiss all the negative assumptions which come along with the title. I myself am an introvert. Some people laugh when I tell them this. Oh… if they only knew the pace of my heart as I struggle to get those first words out, the sweaty palms I try to hide by crossing my arms or digging deep into my pockets, or even the uncontrollable annoying laughter I will knock one over with out of nervous/anxious feelings I seem to be unable to control. I have struggled with this my whole life and been able to get by with stepping outside my comfort zones on many occasions, it’s hard, VERY hard and it never seems to get easier with time. I call these my “out of body experiences” because I have literally learned how to block out these feelings and conquer the task. Oh my word you have no idea what a wreck I am in a job interview….gahhhh! I adore this book for making me feel human again. For helping me accept my introvert character as a gift, not a flaw.
#3
“The Alchemist”~ By Paulo Coelho: I am not going to say this is the most powerful read I have come across, but what I will say, there is POWER in the message the author is sending out if you read between the lines and open your heart and mind to what he is trying so greatly to express. Encouraging ALL dreamers alike to listen to your heart, follow your dreams, live life to the fullest as you were chosen to do.
Now get to reading & please share any and all must reads on your list as I tackle one of my NY’s Resolution~ READ MORE!! There is so much power and inspiration in the written word!
Happy New Year~Much Love! MJ

Amit Gupta founder of Photojojo and one Awesome man who has inspired us with photography tools and inspiration has found out he has acute leukemia and is in need of a bone marrow transplant ASAP. But has had trouble finding a donor due to the lack of donors from the South Asian (Indian, Pakistani, Bangladeshi, Nepalese, Bhutani, Maldivian and Sri Lankan) community. Please take the time to check out the site “Be the Match” and remember this one fact~ “Only half of the thousands who will need a bone marrow transplant will ever recieve one due to lack of donors” Be somebodies match and save a life!
XO MJ
Two weeks ago I got a call from my doctor, who I’d gone to see the day before because I’d been feeling worn out and was losing weight, and wasn’t sure why.
He was brief: “Amit, you’ve got Acute Leukemia. You need to enter treatment right away.”
I was terrified. I packed a backpack full of clothes, went to the hospital as he’d instructed, and had transfusions through the night to allow me to take a flight home at 7am the next day. I Googled acute leukemia as I lay in my hospital bed, learning that if it hadn’t been caught, I’d have died within weeks.

I have a couple more months of chemo to go, then the next step is a bone marrow transplant. As Jay and Tony describe below, minorities are severely underrepresented in the bone marrow pool, and I need help.
A few ways to help:
- If you’re South Asian, get a free test by mail. You rub your cheeks with a cotton swab and mail it back. It’s easy.
- If you’re in NYC, you can go to this event my friends are putting on.
- If you know any South Asians (India, Pakistan, Bangladesh, Nepal, Bhutan, Maldives, or Sri Lanka), please point ‘em to the links above.
*UPDATE 1* Organize a donor drive near you (the most helpful thing you could possibly do!) email 100kcheeks@gmail.com. They’ll send you kits, flyers, tell you what to say, and make the whole process easy cheesy.
*UPDATE 2* Want to get a free test, but not in the US. Here’s a list of international donor registries that are globally searchable.
My friend Amit Gupta founded my favorite photography site Photojojo. A few weeks ago, he was diagnosed with leukemia. Amit is one of the nicest, most genuine, most creative people you could ever meet. Prior to founding the awesome Photojojo, he also co-founded Jelly in 2006 in NYC, a coworking community, that’s now spread to 60 cities across the world and helped spark the coworking revolution. It looks like Amit will need a bone marrow transplant quite soon. We can help him with that.
Unlike blood transfusions, finding a genetic match for bone marrow that his body will accept is no easy task. The national bone marrow registry has 9.5 million records on file, yet the chances of someone from South Asian descent of finding a match are only 1 in 20,000.
This is where we come in. We’re going to destroy those odds.
How? By finding and registering as many people of South Asian descent as we possibly can.
Tests are easy– a simple swab of the cheek. If you’re a match, the donation involves an outpatient procedure. It’s not fun, but it’s not dangerous either. And doing it could save a life.
We are encouraging anyone of South Asian descent to take a test to see if you’re a match.
You can get a free test by mail, or, if you’re in New York, you can join us Friday, October 14th for a special party to rally support.
We’ll have test kits on hand at the party, as well as music, booze, and maybe even a photo booth. It will, for the first time, combine a House 2.0-style party with a New Work City-style party, and if you’ve ever been to either, you know they are always something special.
Please spread the word and please do everything you can to help Amit beat leukemia. He’s a superstar.
Much thanks to Tony and pals for organizing this event, and EVERYONE who’s been tweeting and reblogging.
Please help get the word out any way you can. My life quite literally depends on it.
